Artist Yoshiko Yumoto creates one-of-a-kind Hina dolls called "Hinamame" with a delicate sense of color. These Kimekomi Hina dolls, with their adorable bean-like shape, were born from a desire to cherish ancient Japanese traditions, customs, and aesthetics. The five-doll set, complete with three court ladies, is a special ensemble that will add splendor to any celebratory occasion. The costumes are made from high-quality antique kimonos and fabrics used until the early Showa period. These rare and difficult-to-obtain items possess colors, patterns, and textures that are not found today, such as Edo chirimen (crepe) and delicate embroidery and shibori (tie-dyeing). The gentle expressions of the Hina dolls and Inubako (dog boxes) are meticulously hand-painted by a master doll face painter. Inubako have long been used in Hina Matsuri displays as auspicious charms to pray for safe childbirth and good health. The Hagoita (battledore) is a talisman to ward off evil spirits. The tied kumihimo (braided cord) gently invites happiness. The Chigibako is an auspicious item that has been passed down at Shiba Daijingu Shrine since the Edo period. It is added to the Hinamame as a charm to wish for good relationships and happiness. The auspicious motif of the Ohajiki (play stones) were individually crafted from molds using stone clay. When displayed on a beeswax-finished Takatsuki (pedestal dish), they become richly expressive. The vermillion-lacquered Bonbori (lanterns), the Shinno-dai (imperial stand) edged with antique fabric from the prestigious Takimura Bijutsu Orimono, the colorful Mari (balls) painstakingly wound with individual silk threads, and the large and small合わせ貝 (matching clam shells) with their elaborate lacquerwork and craftsmanship. These delicately crafted miniature props add a vibrant touch. For the gold folding screen, we specially ordered gold paper from Rekiseisha, which possesses a unique foil-stamping technique used by GUCCI, HERMES, and various museums around the world. The delicate diffuse reflection beautifully enhances the Hina dolls. The back is adorned with carefully selected chiyogami (decorative paper) to create a bountiful and auspicious impression. It is not only recommended as a gift for the first Hina Matsuri but also as a reward for oneself or as a seasonal decoration. The custom-made paulownia box can be used not only as a storage box but also as a display stand. The paulownia wood, which is excellent in insect-proofing, decay prevention, and moisture resistance, carefully protects the delicate Hina dolls. Why not display them as casually as seasonal flowers and create your own stylish Hina Matsuri?
