Artist Satoko Yumoto creates “Hinamame,” one-of-a-kind Hina dolls with a delicate sense of color.
These small Hina dolls are designed to honor ancient Japanese traditions and beautiful customs, yet can be easily displayed and enjoyed in modern living spaces. The charm of Hinamame lies in the meticulously crafted details.
These wood-carved Hina dolls have an adorable, round shape, like beans. For their costumes, we use rare antique fabrics that have been carefully preserved from the Meiji, Taisho, and early Showa periods. These high-quality fabrics, including Edo chirimen and those with delicate embroidery and shibori, were discovered throughout Japan. Their unique colors, patterns, and textures add an elegant touch of color. The cosmos pattern on the Princess Hina's kimono is a lovely and stylish motif cherished since the Meiji era.
The gentle expressions of the Hina dolls and Inubako (dog boxes) are carefully hand-painted by a master doll face painter. The auspicious motif of the Ohajiki (marbles) is created by molding each piece from stone clay and applying soft layers of color.
The base is made of solid cherry wood and finished with beeswax, accentuating the beauty of its natural texture.
We also recommend adding small props such as folding screens and hagoita (battledores) to create your preferred display. This season, we offer two types of accessory sets sold separately. By collecting them little by little over the years, you can enjoy the evolving display and cherish it for a long time.
Hinamame dolls blend seamlessly with any interior, be it French or Nordic.
They are a perfect gift for a child's first Hina Matsuri (Doll Festival), and many people also choose them as a treat for themselves or as a seasonal decoration to enjoy like flowers.
They are delivered in a custom-made paulownia wood box. Paulownia wood, with its excellent insect-repelling, antiseptic, and moisture-resistant properties, and resistance to burning, carefully protects the delicate Hina dolls. It serves not only as a storage box but also as a beautiful display stand, and it's easy to take out and put away. It's wonderful to be able to display them without fuss.
Why not casually display them in your entryway or on a cabinet and create your own stylish Hina Matsuri?
