Paris Correspondence Beatrice Laval ②

April 10, 2024

Visit to Beatrice Laval's home in Paris!

Reiko Nakagawa, owner of Brand Julie, praised him as a "color genius!"

This is a continuation of the visit to Beatrice Laval's home on behalf of Nakagawa-san.

Beatrice is the designer and president of the fabric brand "Le Monde Sauvage."

The kitchen ceiling is yellow!

French homes usually have white ceilings, no matter how eccentric their interiors.

Many people incorporate yellow into their kitchen walls, as in Monet's house in Giverny, but why on the ceiling?

"I wanted to use bright yellow in the kitchen, but the walls and floors are gray, so there's no way to incorporate it...

So, what about the ceiling? (laughs) I tried it out and it wasn't too bad."

The yellow painted ceiling is complemented by a violet Venetian glass chandelier.

It creates a truly unique space.

The velvet curtains in the same color as the chandelier are also a nice touch.

"Fabrics, like curtains and cushions, bring colour into your home, just like flowers.

That's why Le Monde Sauvage fabrics are available in a wide range of colours.

Unlike furniture or wall colors, fabrics are easy to incorporate, so I think it's great to play around with them freely.

I read an article the other day that said, "Living space is the last place of freedom we have left," and I thought that was certainly true.

When you go outside, there are traffic rules, you have to wear a mask, and you have to follow certain rules, but

You can do whatever you want in the house. If you make a mistake, it's your house. You're not causing any trouble to anyone!"

“I call the shelves in my kitchen ‘kitchen bookshelves.’ The kitchen tools are so beautiful.

This is exactly what I think about the beauty of utility. That's why I've arranged the books in a way that makes them look like they're lined up on a bookshelf, but also makes them easy to use.

A large piece of pottery inherited from her mother, and plates made by her 11-year-old daughter at the pottery class she has been attending since she was five.

The antique pots and other items are all treasured possessions.

I'm happy to be able to use my precious treasures every day. I choose to enjoy the daily joy of using them rather than putting them away because I'm worried they might break.

Because Beatrice loves cooking, some of her friends give her expensive kitchen tools such as copper pots as gifts.

He says that he really does use those special tools. They're not just there for decoration...

And the icing on the cake is a British-made oven stove!

"I'm really proud of this! It's different from a regular oven or stove, and it's easy to use.

It takes some planning to use it effectively. It's perfect for dishes that require slow cooking over a long period of time.

When we have guests over, we put food in the oven in the morning and let it cook all day.

Finally, you can finish it off on the grill and serve it at the table.

It's very convenient to be able to do other things while cooking."

She is a female president, a designer, a mother of three daughters, and a wife to a wonderful husband.

And her daily cooking is perfect?! Who would have thought someone like that even exists!

"I don't do anything I don't like. For example, I ask other people to clean! (laughs)

Cooking is like a meditation for me.

After concentrating really hard while cooking, my head feels clear.

Even in France, women tend to take on a lot of work, so not striving for perfection may be the key to success.

I think it's probably because of my age. When you're young, everyone tries their best."

By the way, the pottery made by your daughter. Pottery is one of the most popular extracurricular activities for children in France.

I've never seen a piece of work like this that can actually be used and displayed.

"She calls this a 'Hokusai wave.' I like to put it on baked goods at tea time,

I use it as an aperitif or to serve finger foods."

Maybe she is a born creator, just like her mom!

Next, let's move on to the bedroom.

Behind the blue door in the living room is the couple's bedroom.

Again, the door, painted the same color as the wall, looks lovely.

Come to think of it, why have all the doors been white up until now?! Assumptions are scary.

The bedroom walls are a black colour from Farrow & Ball called "Off Black".

It's a soft black, like a black version of off-white.

There are many cushions piled on the bed. The cushions, bedspread, sheets,

They all come in a variety of materials, colors, and patterns.

Beatrice shared some advice on choosing colors.

"There are no bad colors, no bad taste. Just find harmony."

This reminds me of the words:

This landscape is a living example of that saying.

"The brand philosophy of Le Monde Sauvage at the time of its founding, which was to collect interesting items from all over the world, is still highly valued today.

The mysterious colors and materials brought from far away countries are truly fascinating.

When you incorporate it into your everyday life, it can create unexpected fun.

If we value diversity, are open-minded, and enjoy the differences in culture, customs, and ways of thinking,

Wouldn't life be so much better?"

Beatrice does not just offer fabrics,

It's a philosophy that enriches life. That's what I felt when I visited her.

Curtains, cushions, wallpaper, and curtain hooks by Beatrice.

Brand Julie offers a carefully selected range of products.

I recommend watching YouTube to see Nakagawa explain how to incorporate this into your home!

You'll see that just changing the color of one cushion can completely change the atmosphere of the space.
